Donegal

Donegal, almost a separate Republic, possesses both scale and drama. I have family at the very top of the county and it has been a place I've driven through rather than engaged with. Lately, I've been considering how to approach photographing it since coming across Rachel Giese's book 'The Donegal Pictures'. Another photographer who collaborates with poets, she photographed during the Seventies this extraordinary landscape. From initial scouts with polaroids to larger formats later, I've wondered how best to take on such a challenging landscape and to see what might, if anything, might emerge. I found a landscape with centuries of human markings, both ancient and contemporary, even in the most isolated and deserted spots.
